Web browsers remember sites that have been visited and searches carried out. If you are worried that someone will find out that you have visited this site, you can cover your tracks.

 

ERASE HISTORY

 

To erase any records of websites that you have visited, you can follow the relevant instructions below, depending on which browser you use.

Microsoft Internet Explorer

  • Open the “Tools” menu (top right)
  • Choose “Safety”
  • Click on “Delete browsing history”
  • Tick “History” and “Cookies and website data”
  • Click “Delete”
    Close the dialogue box
    You can also use the keyboard – press Ctrl + Shift + Delete to open the “Delete browsing history” dialogue box

Mozilla Firefox

  • Open the “Tools” menu (top right)
  • Choose “Options” > “Privacy” > “History”
  • Click on “Clear recent history”
  • Tick “Browsing and download history” and “Cookies”
  • Choose the time range to clear
  • Click “Clear now”
    Close the dialogue box
    You can also use the keyboard – press Ctrl + Shift + Delete to open the “Clear recent history” dialogue box

Safari

  • Click on the “Safari” menu (top left)
  • Click on “Clear history”
  • Choose the time range to clear
  • Click on “Clear history”

Chrome

  • Open the “Tools” menu (top right)
  • Choose “History”
  • Click on “History”
  • Click on “Clear browsing data”
  • On the “Basic” tab, tick “Browsing history” and “Cookies and other site data”
  • Click on “Clear data”
    You can also use the keyboard – press Ctrl + Shift + Delete to open the “Clear browsing data” dialogue box

 

DISABLE AUTOCOMPLETE

 

To delete all records of words typed into search engines, follow the appropriate instructions below depending on the browser you use.

Microsoft Internet Explorer

  • Open the “Tools” menu (top right)
  • Choose “Internet Options” then the “Content” tab
  • In the “AutoComplete” section, click on “Settings”
  • Click on “Clear AutoComplete History”
  • Tick “Form data” and click “Delete”
    You can also untick “Forms” in the “AutoComplete Settings” dialogue box to avoid storing this information in the future.
  • Click “OK” to close the dialogue box

Mozilla Firefox

  • Open the “Tools” menu (top right)
  • Choose “Options” > “Privacy” > “History”
  • Click on “Clear recent history”
  • Tick “Form and search history”
  • Choose the time range to clear
  • Click “Clear now”
  • Close the dialogue box

Safari

  • Open the “Safari” menu and choose “Preferences”
  • On the menus which appear, choose “AutoFill”
  • Look for the line which says “Other forms” and click the “Edit” button

Chrome

  • Open the “Tools” menu (top right)
  • Choose “History”
  • Click on “History”
  • Click on “Clear browsing data”
  • Go to the “Advanced” tab and tick “Autofill form data”
  • Click on “Clear data”
    You can also use the keyboard – press Ctrl + Shift + Delete to open the “Clear browsing data” dialogue box
