Students at François d’Assise–Nicolas Barré high school (FANB) took part in a thought-provoking workshop on the theme “Unisex jobs: a generational issue? Professional stereotypes, from influencers to accountants”.

Organised by the Committee for Graduate Employment in collaboration with the Women’s Rights Committee, the aim was to get young people thinking about the prejudices they are able to spot, and their own unconscious biases. Comedian and qualified nurse Hassan de Monaco, who is also a women’s rights ambassador, and entrepreneur Laurie Giacobi were both on hand to talk about their own personal experiences of working in roles traditionally carried out by the opposite sex, and take part in a debate.

Following a brief introduction explaining the definition of the terms “stereotype” and “discrimination”, the students had to take a stance and make the case for or against motions including:

  • Sexist clichés are dying out
  • A person’s career choices are influenced by the sex

The event was well received by the guests and the students, providing a new forum for interaction and dialogue on the important issues in today’s society.
