Last night, the National Council voted to adopt Act No. 1,517 reforming provisions on the prosecution of sexual assault.

The new Act, passed by the National Council with the support of both the Committee and the Department of Justice, will:

– Redefine what constitutes sexual assault and establish new penalties
– Improve the way victims are treated
– Make “consent” central to the legal definitions of rape and sexual assault

In his speech, HE the Minister of State said “this is a landmark piece of legislation that will mark an important new milestone in the fight against sexual assault.”
