Yesterday, the National Council passed Act No. 1,523, on the promotion and protection of women’s rights by the amendment and repeal of obsolete and unfair provisions.
The new Act, passed by the National Council with the support of both the Committee and the Department of Justice, will:
- Bring various standards up to date to reflect changes in the law, such as the repeal of provisions on the old dowry system.
- Adapt the language used to reflect changes in society, by altering certain outdated references to sex or gender in order to make them neutral or to cover both sexes.
“This updating of legal provisions will further efforts to build up women’s rights, and to bring the Principality in line with changes in society and, internationally, with the recommendations of the United Nations. I would like to commend the Women’s Rights Committee, which has made a dynamic contribution to updating Monegasque legislation,” said HE the Minister of State in his speech.
